Mariposa

There’s a moment — quiet but charged — when something inside us begins to shift. That’s what I was reaching for with this piece. She doesn’t look directly at you. She looks just past you, toward something unseen, while the world around her dissolves into petals and wings and the kind of beautiful chaos that change always brings. The butterfly isn’t a symbol I chose lightly. It’s the oldest metaphor we have for becoming — and somehow, it never gets old, because the feeling never gets old.

I painted her in deep, absorbing darks, letting her emerge from shadow the way clarity sometimes emerges from confusion. The bursting purples and reds at the crown of her head aren’t decoration — they’re energy, thought, emotion made visible. She is mid-transformation, and she is stunning in it. In my work, I’ve always been drawn to the preciousness of the human experience, those fleeting in-between moments that don’t photograph well but stay with us forever. This painting brings a sense of quiet drama to a space — the kind that makes a room feel contemplative, alive, and a little enchanted.
